Muir Woods National Monument is one of the first parks ever set aside for the coastal redwoods. This national park was named for the renowned conservationist, John Muir. Before the logging industry came to California, there were about two million acres of old growth forest, including redwoods, growing along a narrow strip on the coast. However, by the early 20th century, most of these areas had been cleared. There remained a small valley, named Redwood Canyon, which through a fascinating train of events was protected and is now referred to as Muir Woods. Come and visit this magical place yourself for the rest of the story!
The redwoods located here have a biological ancestry dating back well over a million years. Redwoods have no aging mechanisms, are extremely resistant to disease, and have few natural enemies. Thus individual redwoods can live to be thousands of years old. You and your peers will have time to wander among these ancient trees, and are sure to come away with a sense of the immense grandeur and spans of time encompassed by this noble forest.
Next, you will visit sparkling Sausalito, a Riviera-like bayside village with its winding wooded streets, eclectic houseboats, unique boutiques, and art galleries. A private lunch is included in a restaurant overlooking the Marina Harbor, Richardson Bay, Mt. Tamalpais, Angel Island, and Marin County.
On the way back, we will drive into fabled Marin County, with its astonishingly varied land and seascapes. And finally, you will cross the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge to make your way to San Francisco for your stay at the Westin St. Francis.
